Lesson 4

Now you have played all the major chords you must learn how the same chord can be played at different positions on the guitar. The easiest and most common way to do this is to use bar chords. A bar chord keeps the same finger position but by moving the hand to a different fret position the chord is changed.

You may have noticed in lesson 3 that the chords F and F# are similar but F is played on the first fret and F# on the second fret. Using this principle any chord can be played using the same finger shape.

  • Here is G and A played using the 'E shape'.

  • Try playing these chords and experiment with different fret starting positions.

  • Notice the similarities between the chords.

G
A
  • Use the fret chart below to work out what 'E shape' chord is played on each fret. F is played on the 1st fret and E is played 'Open' or on the 12th fret.

  • Try playing all of these chords. It is hard work but with practice you will be able to play them with ease.

To improve your skill you must practice over and over. Playing along to your favourite songs is a good way to start.
